Process Paper
I chose to research women in computer science for multiple reasons. Firstly, I am interested in computer science and programming. I learn programming languages in my free time and I thought that researching this topic would be entertaining and allow me to learn more about a subject I enjoy. Also, computer science today is a very male-dominated field. However, it wasn't always that way. Many of the original computing pioneers were female. Their contributions should not be forgotten.
All of my research was conducted online. Unfortunately, the libraries that I had access to did not have much relevant material, and the materials that I did want to look at were unavailable. I was able to find much more about my topic online. Also, it was much easier to access online materials as opposed to hard copies. For these reasons, I decided to use online materials for my research.
I knew even before I found out the theme and picked a topic that I was going to build a website. I code in my free time and I enjoy working with the multimedia elements of a historical website. Once I settled on computer science as my topic, it became even more obvious to me that the best category for my project would be a website. My project itself could become an example of the legacy of the original pioneers in computing. When I built the website, I chose a minimalistic theme and changed it to fit what I wanted using the Weebly tools and my own knowledge of HTML and CSS.
The topic of women in computer science relates incredibly well to the theme of leadership and legacy. The three women I chose to discuss were pioneers in computer science and paved the way for future programmers. These women, and the many others who I was unable to discuss, are not only leaders in computing, but they have also left an unforgettable legacy. Their work can inspire generations of girls to become programmers or enter other STEM fields. They are role models for any woman who wants to pursue a technological career.
